Most people have
heard of Crime Stoppers but don't really know what it is. If
that is the case with you, please take a few minutes to learn more about
Crime Stoppers.
Crime
Stoppers was started in Albuquerque, N.M., in 1976 and there are
now programs in England, Australia, Canada and Africa. The program began
as an effort to obtain information on a murder case. The caller was
guaranteed anonymity and that guarantee continues to this day.
Crime Stoppers
is a community-based program operated entirely by the citizens of the
community in which the program is located. It involves the public, the
media and the police in the fight against crime. Cash rewards are offered
to people who call the advertised "hot line" number with information
on felony crimes.
The reward fund
is supported by a percentage of probation fees collected by the courts
that are given to local programs. However, local programs must find
their own funds for advertising, phone bills and other expenses.
Crime Stoppers
in Grand Prairie is governed by The Grand Prairie Crime Commission,
which is responsible for raising those funds. The Crime Commission is
made up of dues-paying citizens and businesses, and is governed by a
set of by-laws. Donations to the Crime Commission to support Crime Stoppers
is tax deductible.
The Grand Prairie
Police Department assigns an officer to act as a liaison between the
Crime Commission and the Police Department. That officer coordinates
the day-to-day operation of Crime Stoppers and is responsible
for answering the "hot line", taking information, distributing it to
the proper investigative unit, making reward recommendations and performing
any other duties necessary to keep the program running smoothly.
We appreciate your
support in making this highly successful program even more successful.
