Explorers learning building searchThe Grand Prairie Police Department runs a Law Enforcement Explorer program for the young men and women of Grand Prairie and surrounding communities, ages fourteen to twenty-one. This program is provided so that they may have an opportunity to experience police work first hand as well as develop leadership and citizenship skills that will impact them throughout their lives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

1. 14 years of age but not yet 21
2. Must maintain a "C" average
3. Have no serious police record
4. Have parental permission
5. Pass a background check
6. Pass an interview board
7. Maintain a neat appearance

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The goals and objectives of the Grand Prairie Law Enforcement Explorer Program are to:

  • Further the Explorer's Education
  • Encourage participation in community service
  • Enhance the Explorer's preparation for future roles as citizens, community leaders and future law enforcement officers

RIDE ALONG PROGRAM

The ride along program allows the Explorers to observe officers as they work in the field during an 8-hour tour of duty. Explorers can experience and learn law enforcement first hand through this valuable learning experience. Before riding along the Explorer must pass certain criteria.

Explorer training at the gun rangeTRAINING

The Explorers receive a multitude of training from police officers that volunteer to serve as "Advisors" to the program. The training that the Explorers includes but is not limited to the following areas:

  • Radio Procedure
  • First Aid
  • Traffic Control

  • Criminal Law
  • Traffic Law
  • Building Search
  • Hostage Negotiation
  • Domestic Crisis Intervention
  • Arrest and Search
  • Accident Investigation
  • Crime Prevention
  • Bomb Threat Response
  • Traffic Stops
Explorer TrophiesExplorers attend and compete annually at the state competition hosted by the Texas Law Enforcement Explorer Advisors Association (TLEEAA). The Explorers apply the training that they have received throughout the year in this competition. The Explorers also attend competitions hosted by other Law Enforcement Explorer Associations throughout the state. The Explorers also have the opportunity to attend the National Law Enforcement Explorer Competition, which is held every other year and presented by the Boy Scouts of America and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.

The Grand Prairie Police Explorer Post #760 is a non-profit organization and is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America through their Learning for Life Program. The Explorer program is open to both boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 21.
