Commercial Vehicle Enforcement

The Grand Prairie Police Department has two officers that are currently certified to perform Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on commercial motor vehicles. These officers conduct traffic enforcement related to commercial vehicles, applying both Texas state law and Federal DOT laws to keep unsafe trucks off our highways. This highly successful program has been in Grand Prairie since 2007 and our officers are viewed as some of the best nationwide. As part of the Grand Prairie Police Department's commitment to partnering with motor carriers, we are proud to be members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the Dallas Fort Worth Council of Safety Professionals.

Property and Evidence

The Property and Evidence Division receives and maintains over 100,000 pieces of property per year. Everything from cigarette butts to headstones. You just have to name it and we probably have it.

Property Retrieval

Property may be claimed Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Identification, as well as the case number, if known, is required. Found property that has an identified owner will be held for 90 days and a certified letter or postcard notifying such owner will be mailed.

Found property that has no known owner will be held 30 days. After the 90 or 30 days have expired, the property will then be disposed of according to Texas Code of Criminal Procedure 18.17. Found abandoned bicycles are kept for 30 days, and then set for auction. (See below auction procedures.)

Evidence Retrieval

The Property Room is only a storage location for all forms of evidence. We do not make decisions for the release of any evidence item. Evidence may be released with the authority of a police officer or the detective that is handling the case, in which you will need to contact them to gain authorization. Evidence may also be released with a court order signed by the judge who presided over the case. This is generally done after the case is completed in the county courts. Evidence will only be released to the person designated by the order.

Auctioned Property

After property procedures have been met, and subsequently unclaimed, these items are set for auction.

Auctions are held the 1st Wednesday of each month at the Grand Prairie Auto Pound, 3010 Hardrock Road, Grand Prairie, Texas 75050. Phone: 972-237-4100.

There are no set lists of what is ready for auction, each month is different. The auction of these items, as well as abandoned/unclaimed vehicles, is open to the general public. School Resource Officers

School Resource Officers (SROs) are police officers that are assigned full-time to a specific school. They are a steady presence of authority and an inspiration to the children. The presence of School Resource Officers deters unacceptable behavior and gives the children guidance. The officers are active with the children providing interactive programs such as DFYIT (Drug Free Youth in Texas) and Campus Crime Stoppers.

The city of Grand Prairie and the Grand Prairie Independent School District share the cost of maintaining this type of police presence on school campuses, along with grant money. When possible, any and all police activity on the campus is handled by the officer assigned to it.

Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit of the Grand Prairie Police Department has an authorized strength of 16 officers and two supervisors. These officers work primarily at enforcing traffic laws and investigating traffic collisions. All traffic officers have training in collision investigation and most have received specialized advanced training in collision reconstruction. This training is necessary for officers to properly investigate collisions involving fatalities or serious injuries, one of the responsibilities of the Traffic Unit.

Motorcycle Unit

Officers in the Motorcycle Unit primarily conduct traffic enforcement, direct traffic and respond to collisions. All motorcycle officers have training in accident investigation and respond to traffic collisions to either investigate the collision or to provide traffic assistance. They also have the responsibility of directing traffic at large events, such as Lone Star Park, AirHogs Ballpark and the Theatre at Grand Prairie.

Traffic Investigations/Vehicle Crimes Unit

While all traffic officers have training in collision investigation, there are several officers who are specially trained "Accident Investigators" (AI). These officers are responsible for investigating fatal traffic collisions, collisions involving serious injuries and "fleet" collisions, in which vehicles belonging to the city of Grand Prairie are involved. When not investigating collisions, they primarily conduct traffic enforcement.

The investigators assigned to the Vehicle Crimes Unit are responsible for filing criminal traffic cases, including DWI and hit and run. These investigators may also be called upon to investigate collisions and conduct traffic enforcement.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement

The department's certified commercial vehicle inspectors conduct traffic enforcement related to commercial vehicles and enforce Federal Department of Transportation laws to keep unsafe trucks off our highways.
