Auto Impound

The Grand Prairie Police Department is responsible for the impounding of vehicles due to traffic accidents, hazards, junk vehicles, arrests, auto accidents and other miscellaneous reasons.

Hours of Operation

Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Saturday/Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Rules for Attendance

  1. All persons attending must be 18 years or older.
  2. All persons are required to wear appropriate clothing to include shirt, pants, and shoes.
  3. Smoking of any type is prohibited; this includes vapes, e-cigarettes, pipes, cigarettes, and cigars.
  4. Attendees have access to the auction lot and the parking lot to access the auction lot only.
  5. Attendees will not pass tape, rope or other lines that indicate the boundaries of the auction.
  6. Any behavior that Grand Prairie Police Auto Pound staff believe to be unsafe will not be tolerated.

Any person found violating these rules or other directions given by Auto Pound staff are, along with the rest of their party in attendance, subject to dismissal from the property and/or in violation of Texas Penal Code 30.05 (Criminal Trespass).

Fees

Vehicle owners can inquire on the status of their impounded vehicles and get an estimate of fees owed. The service is available at: https://www.findmytowedcar.org/grandprairie

Vehicle owners will need to key in the License Plate or full VIN of the vehicle.

Vehicle and Property Auction

Vehicle auctions are held on the second Wednesday of each month. Bidding begins at 10 a.m. and is held at the auto impound facility, 3010 Hardrock Road, Grand Prairie.

  • Registration begins at 09:00 am.
  • Viewing begins at 09:30 am.
  • Bidding begins at 10:00 am.

Terms:

  • A valid driver's license and $100.00 deposit is required to bid. $100. Deposit will be returned if no bid is won.
  • You must be 18 yrs and older to be permitted on the lot.
  • You must show a valid driver's license or ID at time of registration.
  • All vehicles are sold as is.
  • All sales are final.
  • All bids must be paid for that same day by 1:00 p.m.
  • We accept cash, cashiers checks, Master Card, Visa, and Discover.
  • Splitting payment methods is not permitted.
  • All vehicles must be removed by Friday, 6:00 p.m., the same week of the auction.
  • The auction is held by Rene Bates Auctioneers and vehicles are sold to the highest bidder.

Vehicle Release

You must be the registered owner or be able to prove ownership in one of the following manners:

  • Title or Bill of Sale
  • Property release from the jail from the registered owner or accompanied by proof of ownership.
  • A notarized letter from the registered owner.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or picture ID.
  • Must have valid insurance to drive car off lot.
  • Must have current registration to drive off lot.

VIN Inspections

The Auto Theft Unit performs VTR-68-A (VIN Inspections) free of charge for Grand Prairie residents only (with proof of address; no businesses). No commercial vehicles/trailers of any kind will be inspected.

A VTR-68-A is required for the following transactions:

  • A vehicle is missing the VIN plate
  • Assembled vehicles
  • Homemade or shop-made trailers
  • An application for a bonded title on an out of state vehicle that does not have a Texas record
  • Vehicles imported from another country
  • Any other transaction as specifically requested by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles

Date/Time

These inspections occur on the Tuesday before the second Wednesday (Grand Prairie Automobile Impound Auction Day) of every month from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Location

The VIN inspections take place at Grand Prairie Auto Pound located at 3010 Hardrock Road. No appointment is necessary, but you must sign in at the Auto Pound Office first.
