CommUNITY Policing Initiatives

The Grand Prairie Police Department is dedicated to service and partnering with our community to maintain a safe environment with a high quality of life.

Adopt-A-Street

The Adopt-A-Street program is a cooperative effort between the city, our residents, business owners, clubs, and organizations to keep our right-of-ways and neighborhoods clean and beautiful.

Badges and Books

Badges and Books is an event at the Grand Prairie Library to bring together officers and children. This cooperative effort between GPPD and the City of Grand Prairie's Library system is open to anyone interested in meeting officers and learning about the equipment, technology, and techniques they use to protect and serve.

Bigs in Blue with Big Brother Big Sisters

GPPD teamed up with Mayor Ron Jensen and the Big Brothers Big Sisters to form the first-ever pilot program at Grand Prairie High School where first responders and employees of the City of Grand Prairie mentor high school students. The Mayor's Mentors program in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) answered the call of 60 Grand Prairie kids who wanted a big brother or big sister!

Citizens Police Academy (CPA)

Grand Prairie Police Department's Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is an educational program designed to familiarize the public with the nature of police work. Participants are encouraged to share this realistic view of the Department with other citizens. The goal is to improve the efficiency of law enforcement in their neighborhoods through open lines of communication, shared responsibilities and resources.

Graduates of the Grand Prairie Citizen Police Academy are not trained to be police officers or vigilantes. The purpose of the CPA is to educate attendees so they can make informed judgments about the police department as they become ambassadors of good will to the community.

Coffee with a Cop

Coffee and Conversation is on the menu for this special event held at coffee shops around town. The public is invited to attend to spend the morning with officers and chat over java and breakfast.

COPE - Community Outreach Partnership and Education

The Grand Prairie Police Department’s COPE initiative stands for “Community Outreach Partnership and Education.” This information-sharing program allows first responders to have immediate access to helpful information that would assist them in a crisis. Our first responders are dedicated to partnering with our citizens with disabilities, and it is our proactive goal to have a program in place to assist. In the event a person is unable to properly identify themselves, or becomes lost/disoriented, or might act in a manner that could be misinterpreted by first responders, this information could be accessed rapidly.

HELP - Helping Explore Life's Potential

Grand Prairie Police mentors offer non-judgmental guidance and direction to at-risk youth during a non-enforcement interaction. These informal small group “break-out sessions” enable participants to discuss life’s challenges, with police officers and community leaders, and receive essential tools to navigate these problems. By reducing the social distance between at-risk youth and law enforcement, a positive mentoring relationship is built to H.E.L.P. kids out of the criminal justice system for good! Once kids understand, on their own, life’s true potential, they begin to view life through a new productive lens.
